![]() Thanks to a handicap that tests his over-confidence, he’s forced into a rapid maturation process. ![]() Rather than remaining the somewhat irritating playboy sidekick we came to know in the second book, the captain comes into his own in terms of heroism and comedy. Thorne is by far the highlight of this story. ![]() There’s just enough recap on previous events to sufficiently refresh past readers or draw in those who didn’t get a shot at one or both of the previous books. Erland, weaving the most complex storyline we’ve yet seen. She continues to juggle other goings on concerning Prince Kai, Lavana, Scarlet, Cinder, and Dr. The author really seems to have her writing feet under her now, and she’s off and running right out of the gate with this book. Trade out the isolating tower for an isolating spy satellite, break up the team with a failed rescue attempt, and you have the premise for the primary plot thread in this book. The story of Rapunzel is retold with more similarities to its original fairytale than seen in the previous books, complete with Captain Thorne acting as the thief who would be prince. ![]() Cress is easily the most naïve of the female leads we’ve seen so far, though with good reason-and not without the redemptive trait of ultimately showing the most progress by way of character growth. Meyer adds yet another cast member to the save-the-world team in this, the third installment of the Lunar Chronicles. I’d have to call this one the best in the series thus far. ![]() ![]() ![]() This book is a must-have for mental health professionals, teachers, guidance counselors, and parents of anxious children. ![]() Cognitive and behavioral skills are presented in a gradual, friendly manner, which is invaluable for the anxious child. And, as a matter of fact, the Church of England means all this. Prayer is attractive enough when it is consider in a context of good food, and sunny joyous country churches, and the green English countryside. Here are the passages I particularly enjoyed: ![]() ![]() Plus, he only throws religion in your face for like 20 pages, which is pretty remarkable considering it is a 460-page "autobiography of faith". And he's clearly highly intelligent, which makes it hard to write him off as he swerves from "secular, aspiring writer" to "nascent, devout Catholic" to "intensely committed Catholic monk". Merton is a clear, simple writer, which is always a pleasure. I really liked it, way more than I was expecting to. I recently read Thomas Merton's autobiography, The Seven Storey Mountain. We know she was a beauty, a forceful and tempestuous personality, a woman who turned from a life of luxury to one of extraordinary piety. That said, the one who intrigued me most was Margaret’s mother (and Anne Neville’s great-aunt, as well as mother-in-law) Cecily Neville. ![]() If I had to be stuck on a desert island with one, I’d pick Margaret of Burgundy any day. How much you can tell varies from character to character, but in six out of the seven about whom I write, I’d say you can tell quite a lot – Anne Neville being the exception, maybe! Of the seven, the one to whom I most warmed was Margaret ‘of Burgundy’ (born Margaret of York sister to Edward IV and Richard III), for all that some contempory – Tudor – chroniclers wrote of her spitefully. ![]() How much can you tell about the personality of these women, and do you have a favourite – someone you would like to know more about or spend time with? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Jeb is dating a girl who makes Alyssa’s life miserable, and Alyssa’s crush on Jeb makes everything worse. And yes, there is a strong romance element in these books. Amelia, her husband Emerson, her son Ramses, and other family members are keen archaeologists, who manage to embroil themselves in mysteries and mayhem during their annual excavations. In case you haven’t read any of these books yet (in which case, what are you waiting for?!), these are mysteries set in turn-of-the-century Egypt. ![]() It is one of my all-time favourite series. Right, after umm-ing and ahh-ing about the choice of books, I went for an Amelia Peabody book. ![]() |
